Helen Varney
At Tautai o le Moana – Wayfinders of the Ocean, we’re proud to have Helen Varney leading the way! With 14 years as a Primary School Principal and as an accredited leadership facilitator, Helen is passionate about empowering school leaders to create meaningful change for Pacific learners.
Awarded the MNZM in 2021 for her contributions to education, Helen is dedicated to fostering an inclusive system that values the cultural, linguistic, academic, and social strengths of every learner in Aotearoa. Through mentoring, coaching, and collaboration, she supports Principals in driving transformation.

Facilitator
Karl Vasau
Karl Anthony Vasau is a NZ born Pacific Islander of Niuean, Samoan, Tongan and European descent. He and his partner, Geneva, are the proud parents of a 6 year old son, Karl Jnr.
Karl has been in education for 25 years and started his teaching in 1998. He has been a principal for 16 years in both the State and Catholic School systems and is currently on leave from principalship at Rowandale School. He recently completed his Masters of Contemporary Education (MCEd) through Unitec and The Mind Lab.
As the facilitator of Tautai o Le Moana I engage principals in growth conversations through a Pasifika lens. Karl is a foundation member of the New Zealand Pasifika Principals’ Association (NZPPA), the umbrella group from which Tautai o Le Moana has grown.
He is a firm believer in relationships based learning and parents as first teachers and advocates for quality teaching that caters for the unique needs of 21st Century learners. Karl believes that the BEST teacher for Maori and Pasifika children is the "BEST teacher" who understands their own identity and culture (special conditions apply).
Based in the Auckland region.

Sepora Mauigoa
Sepora Mauigoa is an experienced educator with extensive curriculum knowledge and expertise in cultural pedagogies. Sepora has had many leadership roles in the primary sector including being a school principalship for eight years. She is a skilled leadership mentor and is committed to culturally responsive teaching practices. Sepora has a strong background in assessment for learning and is dedicated to fostering inclusive education. A lifelong learner, she holds a Diploma in TESOL, a Master’s in Educational Leadership, and a Bachelor of Arts in English. As a bilingual Samoan, she brings valuable linguistic and cultural perspectives to her work in education.
